Today I would like to talk about point of reference in relation to character depth. A character should be based on someone, something or yourself that you know really well. This makes it easier for you write the characters dialogue. How will the character react to action? How will you react to action? You can see that a point of reference makes writing easier. Now let’s say you are writing for a fictional character. What qualities in people anger you the most? Do they have attitudes, know it alls, or are they cowards sending someone else to do the dirty work. This can be your point of reference. Once you find the point of reference character depth will flow.
